Murtaza Kazmi

Murtaza is a senior at Rice University majoring in Neuroscience (Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience), minoring in Medical Humanities and Biochemistry & Cell Biology, and pursuing a certificate in Spanish. His research journey includes a translational research project at Baylor College of Medicine where he studied the effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on pain and fatigue symptoms in long-COVID patients. He also conducted sociological research assessing religious students’ perspectives on campus life at Rice. At the Iyer lab, he is focused on exploring the role of microglia in vascular dementia in vivo through established models of ischemic stroke in zebrafish. With this work, he aims to fortify gaps in the current literature and hopefully pave the way for effective vasculature dementia therapies long term.
Beyond academia, Murtaza enjoys working out, playing sports such as basketball and soccer, listening to podcasts, cooking diverse cuisines, and traveling.
